AAdvantage Business Bonus: 10k miles if you have the Citi card.

American Airlines is targeting some AAdvantage accounts with a Business Bonus offer, seen as high as 25,000 miles but often 10,000. The miles land in your AAdvantage Business account, which requires a $5,000 annual spend on AA flights and five enrolled travelers to unlock transfers to your personal account. The Citi AAdvantage Business card waives those requirements, making it the only clean path to actually use the bonus. Without that card, the miles sit in the business account for up to 24 months before expiring.

the play

Check your AAdvantage account under Promotions and Offers for the targeted bonus, then activate it, and plan to pair it with the Citi AAdvantage Business card to unlock the miles.

AA-JAL devaluation: nonstop stays 60k, connecting jumps to 80k

Business class on Japan Airlines via AAdvantage now runs 60,000 miles one-way for nonstop flights but 80,000 miles for any routing that includes a connection — including a domestic JAL segment or an American Airlines positioning flight. First class nonstop holds at 80,000 miles, but connecting itineraries now cost 100,000 miles. The 20,000-mile surcharge applies per direction, making a round-trip with connections cost 40,000 extra miles. Nonstop awards remain unchanged, so those are the clear value play. But factor in the cost of buying a separate positioning ticket and whether through-checked bags and IROPS protection are worth the premium.

the play

Book nonstop Japan Airlines flights with AAdvantage miles to avoid the 20,000-mile surcharge on connecting itineraries.

11 miles per dollar on AA Vacations: status multiplier, not a fire sale. Check the full package price.

The American Airlines Vacations MaximizeMiles promotion offers up to 11 miles and Loyalty Points per dollar on packages, but the rate is tied to your status tier. The real value is in earning Loyalty Points on the hotel/car rental portion, which normally doesn't earn at this rate. However, you forfeit hotel points and elite credits. The promotion is worth considering if you need to close a status gap and the package price is comparable to booking separately. Stacking the Citi AAdvantage Executive card's $250 statement credit (starting Aug. 23) or the 25% Loyalty Point bonus from reaching 60k LP can improve the yield, but don't let a credit justify a bad price.

the play

Compare the total package cost against booking flights and hotels separately, then calculate the incremental Loyalty Points earned to decide if it's worth the trade-off.

AA Kills Direct Economy-to-Business Upgrades on Premium Routes

Starting August 25, 2026, American Airlines eliminates complimentary upgrades from Main Cabin to Business Class on nine three-cabin domestic routes including JFK-LAX, JFK-SFO, and several Hawaii flights. Economy elites will now only clear into Premium Economy, not lie-flat seats. Systemwide upgrades and paid Premium Economy purchases still unlock Business, but the standard comp path is gone. With only 12 Premium Economy seats on the A321XLR versus 20 Business seats, expect empty business cabins while elites sit behind.

the play

Use systemwide upgrades or buy up to Premium Economy to maintain Business Class eligibility on American's three-cabin domestic routes.
